*** About Old Point Loma Lighthouse: Situated on the Point Loma peninsula at the mouth of San Diego Bay, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse is an iconic symbol of the early days of navigation by sea in the United States. Established in 1855, it served as a beacon for sailors navigating the treacherous waters of the Pacific Coast. Standing at a height of 422 feet, it is one of the highest lighthouses in the United States. Nonetheless, frequent fog and low clouds led to its replacement in 1891 with a lighthouse at a lower elevation. Today, it remains a popular tourist attraction and is preserved as part of the Cabrillo National Monument, offering visitors insights into maritime history as well as spectacular views over San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
